Review: Samurai Star Rose Gold Satin Blush (Ultraflesh)

Good day my loves!

I'm super excited to give you my first beauty-related review on here. Hopefully you won't mind the slightly untested/tried format, it ended up being quite very in-depth, be prepared. ^_^

So I picked up this super lux-looking item from my favourite browsing arena, none other than... The beauty shelf at TKMaxx (no judging!). I know it's not at all glamorous nor particularly fruitful 90% of the time, but when a gem is uncovered, my instinct is to go for it. And at £3.99 (RRP £17) I thought the going may end up somewhere great.

The brand

After much rummaging around the interwebs, I finally found a company description. It is a North American brand set up in 2010 which, 'brings together technology in beauty and memorable designs'. They are said to make cosmetics without synthetic dyes, fragrances, petrochemicals, sulphates, parabens, etc. There's no official website (not going to hazard a guess to what happened...) but you can get lots of their products on eBay and beauty websites.

Product ingredients

The manufacturer's description is as follows: "This creamy, silky textured blush delivers a golden radiance to the cheeks. Brown algae extract, tocotrienol, and oligo-peptides deliver antiaging benefits, while its super-mild formula creates a soft, light-diffused effect." (beautylish.com)

I tried my best to decipher the list, and the main 'beneficial' ingredients I could identify were: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, a skin conditioner and emollient extracted from coconut oil; Caprylol Glycol, an anti-bacterial skin conditioner; plus titanium and iron oxides which are physical sunscreens. This all good and well, but despite the brand's claim to being free of harmful chemicals, I did find a sneaky silicone ingredient hiding, very naughty.

Face value

Oh such clever packaging!
This photo is 95% true to real colour in pan

First of all - just look at that packaging. It even has a 18 karat gold detachable themed pendant on the front. (Alternatively I could whip it out against any unwanted attention on a night out pretending that I have samurai skills. Winning.) It has a spacious mirror once opened and a very thoughtful plastic flap on top of the blush, on which a flat rounded brush (similar to ones in Clinique compacts) lies. I can't say much about the brush, from the smell it seems like a mixture of synthetic and real natural hairs, and the shape I think is better suited to contouring. Also it's not soft enough (for me at least) to use for such a finely-milled blush as it over-dusts product everywhere.

Swatches and application

Two-swipe swatch

It gives a 'diffused light' effect over skin

So onto the product itself, it boasts a solid 4.8g (0.17oz) which is almost double of that in a Bourjois Little Round Pot (2.5g). The colour is true to name: a light-medium rosy peach colour with different size gold shimmer particles. The effect is a golden sheen with extremely fine glitters. The swatch showed great pigmentation with a fairly dense and smooth texture - not powdery at all - and very little glitter visible. When it's spread onto the skin, the product dissipates a little and the sparkle comes through. On my cheeks it was easily blendable and buildable.

I have tried a few different brushes with this product, including the one in the case (which I don't think is suitable for such a good quality blush). Depending on the look you're going for, a flat-top kabuki brush works very well all over the cheek, pulling it up towards the ear. A fluffy or duo-fibre face brush would also work if to dust the product lightly across the skin.

Duo to the golden tones of the blush, it would compliment warmer (more yellow, less blue) undertones of eye-makeup and even lip products (otherwise the undertones will clash horribly, and this is speaking from experience...). A bronzed sunkissed look would be perfect!

How and what I've used it with today! A simple, copper-bronze eye look and nude lipgloss. Do however excuse the just-got-out-of-bed hair...

Final thoughts

This is overall a pretty high-end product, both on the outside and in, with a VERY small price tag. It gives a lovely glow without offensive chunky glitter, and applies like a dream. The case is a little chunky but the large mirror makes up for it me thinks!

It would best suit light-medium skintones (might not show up if darker), or any paler girls with a tan on! Perfect for Summer, and I'm very much looking forward to wearing this all season.

Let me know of any thoughts or questions! Go pick up one yourself ASAP! :D

Love,
