Beauty battles: Tea tree water (LUSH vs. The Body Shop)

Hello again beauties!

I have another skincare-related review today, and it's all about the blemish-fighting, redness-combating tea tree water toner. Thought it would also be fun to start a 'beauty battles' thread where I directly compare products which are seemingly competing with eachother in the industry.

Tea tree oil is a renowned natural antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory substance. It is dispersed in liquid to form a toning water, designed to be used after cleansing and before moisturising, to take away any residue of make-up or face cleanser as well as 'toning' up the skin surface.

LUSH (£7.50 for 250ml)

This is definitely considered as one of Lush's cult, top-selling products. It is a clear liquid which can be sprayed straight on to the face or onto a cotton pad first.

Pros: The ingredients list! It has minimal chemical additives compared to the Body Shop's version. It's great to see that tea tree water is its top ingredient, and closely followed by grapefruit water (to refresh and help bring minerals directly to skin). The

Cons: The smell, it will remind you of hospitals but that is normal for all tea tree containing items... I haven't seen it reduce the appearance of pores particularly. It also has an expiry date due to the lack of preservatives (although it is 1 year from date of production!).

Best for: Toning! It is excellent for removing traces of any cleansing or make-up products. I find it's the least wasteful if you spray onto a large cotton pad a few times, but you can also just spray to refresh your face throughout the day! It's also great for disinfecting your pillow (e.g. after accidentally sleeping with make-up on...) and any small cuts or grazes.

THE BODY SHOP (£5 for 250ml)
This is a cheaper alternative in a squeezy bottle. It will smell differently to the LUSH's tea tree water, as it is composed of a slightly different concoction.

Pros: Its active natural ingredients: lemon tea tree, willow bark and witch hazel, together with tea tree oil they make a tried-and-tested blemish and oil controlling A-team. It has been extremely effective at preventing spots, healing them and calming scarring.

Cons: You have to shake the bottle REALLY well to mix the residue (seen at bottom of the bottle in first photo), but I think it works even if it's not totally dissolved. It smells (and tingles) even stronger than the Lush version, and I can imagine irritate very sensitive skin types. The biggests qualm I have are the added [chemical] colourants which can be highly controversial....

Best for: Toning for oilier, combination and less sensitive skins.

Final thoughts
If you have more intolerant skin, especially reactive to added chemicals or preservatives, then the LUSH tea water will serve you well and as a multi-purpose product. The Body Shop toner is aimed more specifically at problem-prone, oily skin - and it works better for what it says on the tin. The price difference sort of reflects the 'purity' of the products, so I would say they're fairly marketed.

Thanks for reading lovelies! Have you tried either of the toners?

Chat with you all soon, lots of love,
